6 Salon, a 21-station hair salon in Birmingham, is located in a ground-level retail storefront. This project involved relocating the client’s nearby 12-station salon. The entry was reconfigured with a new floor-to-ceiling glass storefront extending along the façade, creating an interstitial vestibule and retail space. A desk (not shown) refaced with geometric tiles cut from industrial-grade plywood visually transforms as patrons move toward it, while a mural of original photographs shows the hands of a hairstylist at work. Rows of stylist stations define the major salon spaces.

More than 60 years after opening, Birmingham’s Mills Pharmacy underwent a major transformation. The pharmacy was extended into an adjacent market space, while ground-floor retail spaces were combined along the street frontage and linked to a recessed rear entry. Pre-weathered copper panels frame a new opening and reworked entryway, and a metallic glazed brick recalls the alchemy of the pharmacist. Reclaimed wood extends inside at the entry, and is used to clad the storefront of the original Mills Pharmacy.

Grand Circus is a tech training company specializing in building a strong tech training pool in the city of Detroit. They needed their new space to be attractive to young entrepreneurs, but sophisticated enough for the city’s business community. The concept was based on creating a three-story walk-up brownstone on the park. The stripped-down interior, with exposed mechanicals and concrete columns and ceilings, is offset with custom millwork, high-end finishes, and mid-century furniture.

This space (MCCI, a  marketing firm in Detroit) unites stylistic elements appropriate to a classic, mid-century media company with a forward-thinking creative studio. A row of quintessential managerial offices features anodized frames, clear and translucent glazing, and white oak doors. The “creative studio” is a nearly all-white, other-worldly space full of desks, informal meeting areas, two “phone booths,” a conference room, and a visitor’s/employee lounge. Neatly tucked within the building’s poche are three editing suites, a recording booth, and a photo studio.

This executive suite is on the fourth floor in a mixed-use building overlooking a main road in the center of a growing city. Traditional in character, the executive suite is much more than just a workplace; it’s a thriving family business that is suited to entertain multiple clients, from entrepreneurs to medical professionals. Although this office is designed in the traditional sense, it is anything but — flexible spaces with moving walls can be seen throughout. Here, tradition meets new thinking in this high-tech, elegantly designed facility.
