Hamtramck Disneyland

Published:

One man’s garage is another man’s Hamtramck Disneyland. Don’t believe it? Just ask Dmytro Szylak. A Ukrainian immigrant, Szylak worked 32 years in a GM factory before retiring and beginning construction on an ever-evolving, always-expanding art installation perched high atop two adjacent garages behind his house in Hamtown. That was 18 years ago. Since then, his collection of wooden soldiers, Christmas lights, windmills, discarded paintings, bicycle wheels, and other unusual objects have become something of an attraction for sightseers gathered in the alleyway. See it lit up at dusk or on a windy afternoon when its oddities flap in the breeze and — for a second — you’ll be so mesmerized you might just stop wondering where to find Hamtramck Mickey Mouse.
