Carol Wagner has experienced hair loss and is thankful she was able to find a solution she could share. Hair loss is a sensitive subject, and it affects almost 50 percent of the population at some time during their lifetime.

How does MHSC help people with thinning hair?

Michigan Hair and Skin Center uses an FDA-approved program that combines advanced, state-of-the-art laser treatments with specially formulated hair products to stop hair loss and stimulate re-growth. All treatment plans are customized to meet each client's individual needs. They are noninvasive, natural, painless, and have no side effects.

How does it work?

Thinning hair occurs when the follicles are strangled by excessive DHT (dihydrotestoserone). The laser treatments combined with our products break away the DHT, allowing the hair follicles to get the nutrients necessary to re-grow hair naturally. The process works similar to the way sunlight stimulates the body to produce melanin resulting in a tan. In this case, the laser light stimulates the follicles to re-grow hair. It simply helps the body heal itself.

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

Absolutely! Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) isn't a fad or gimmick. It has been used in Europe for more than 30 years and in the U.S. for more than 15 years. It has been featured on programs such as Dateline, the ABC News, MSNBC, and The Doctors, and in Women's Health and Men's Health magazines. LLLT is medically tested and proven to be safe and effective. A study released at the 2009 International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery Convention showed that 100 percent of the subjects saw an increase in hair growth, and 97 percent experienced increased hair count equal to or greater than 20 percent. Another study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology showed a 91 percent increase in hair among the respondents using the laser.

How long have you been helping people with hair loss?

MHSC has been in business more than five years and has helped hundreds of clients increase their hair volume and quality. Due to referrals from our customers, doctors, and hair stylists, we've recently opened our fourth treatment center to better serve our clients.

Have you seen many changes in those five years?

Even with hundreds of satisfied clients, MHSC is always moving forward and looking for ways to enhance our program. Just to assure our customers that we are utilizing the most cutting-edge technology, we recently developed an alliance with doctors who have more than 23 years of hair loss experience. In addition, our machines have more laser diodes (the element that transfers laser light energy to the client's scalp) than virtually all other laser programs in the marketplace today. Our No. 1 priority is to get our clients the best possible results.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Anyone who still has active hair follicles can benefit from laser therapy. We offer a complimentary consultation, where we perform a magnified scan of the scalp to see if you have good potential and show active hair follicles. If you do, we design a customized program just for you. Follicles eventually die — so the sooner someone seeks treatment, the better.

What does the program consist of?

Studies completed on LLLT therapies recommend an all-inclusive, year-long process that includes laser sessions, hair care products, and periodic evaluations. The treatment frequency varies from one person to another, but most clients start with two 30-minute treatments per week, than decrease to once a week, and so on. Once treatment begins, we compare high-definition images to track results. It's exciting for us and for the client to see the beginnings of hair re-growth and how they progress over time. After undergoing treatment and achieving their goal, the client may follow an individualized routine similar to dental, nail, or skin maintenance.

Is this covered under medical insurance?

Unfortunately, it is not; it is considered a cosmetic procedure. Most clients pay by credit card or check, and we also offer an interest-free payment plan through Chase Health Advance.

How does LLLT compare to other hair-loss treatments?

LLLT is a natural alternative to help with hair loss. Unlike Propecia or Minoxidil, it doesn't just block DHT or slow hair loss; it actually reverses the process without harmful side effects. In addition, both of these drugs only work on a certain percentage of people and require continuous use to avoid possible accelerated hair loss. LLLT is also painless and noninvasive, so clients avoid the surgery, recovery, and downtime required with hair transplants. Many hair transplants don't grow and have to be re-done. Even if transplants do grow, the hair keeps receding — requiring repeated surgeries to fill in the new thinning areas. However, once your follicles have died, the only way to regain hair is surgery. This is why it's important to seek help as soon as possible.

What are your clients saying about LLLT?

We will let them tell you.
"After five weeks of treatment, I already feel a difference. My hair has body and feels thicker and stronger. It's fantastic! Hair loss is a sensitive issue, and I would recommend the treatment to anyone with hair loss. They will honestly tell you if you are a good candidate or not." – Karen/Detroit
"I am so excited! My friends and hairdresser noticed a difference in my hair, and it has only been four months." – Marian/Troy
"My dermatologist suggested I seek LLLT therapy. I am so glad I did." – Marc/Bloomfield
