Best Overall Home
First
McIntosh Poris Associates / MDG Design-Janice Steinhardt - This light-filled, two-story home sits above a subterranean garage. Windows of varying size and placement create a playfully irregular pattern. Inside, large windows at each end of the house illuminate the open loft-like plan. Aluminum-cased punched windows also line the great room sidewalls. Light bamboo floors, white walls, and neutral stone surfaces highlight the owner’s art collection. Without walls to separate rooms, furniture placement defines spaces.

Historic Renovation / Restoration Project
First (tie)
HF: Architecture - This Tudor-style stucco dwelling built around 1916 had suffered bad “updates.” Improvements included a complete exterior stucco restoration and the removal of a deck to allow for a new kitchen/ nook/family space with greater backyard access.
First (tie)
Architectural Resource / Home Renewal Inc. - The owner of this 1800s Italianate home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, requested a sympathetically designed two-car garage addition, mudroom, and in-law suite. A breezeway acts as a hyphen between old and new.

Swanson Meads Architecture / Julia Schwegman Design

Small Remodel (Under 1000 sq.ft.)
First
Architectural Resource / Giraffe Design-Build - This project began with radical changes at the front entry, where the stairway was transformed into a contemporary floating feature. The kitchen was reoriented to be the physical center of the home, and was designed without upper cabinets.
Second
Jeffrey King Interiors
Third
Extraordinary Works
Large Remodel (Over 1000 sq.ft.)
First
Young & Young Architects / Larry Jenkins Builder - This 1950 Harold Turner contemporary was in great disrepair. Only the masonry walls and copper roof remained relatively intact. In the renovation, pickled cypress siding was used in vertical and horizontal applications and insulated glass was fitted within the original window frames. Existing interior slate floors were restored and new materials sourced to match the original color and texture.

Addition Project
First
Young & Young Architects/ Brown Schroeder & Co. - The original galley kitchen was expanded to allow for more gracious cooking and entertaining adjoining the new family/dining room overlooking the waterfront. A two-car expansion was added to the existing garage. Original custom mahogany French doors were refinished, all single-pane glazing was replaced with butt- glazed thermally broken units.

Vacation Homes (Under 3000 sq.ft.)
First
David Lindsey Dow Architects - This Lake Huron cottage was designed to fit an atypical lot and sited to maximize lake views and make use of natural earth insulation. To capture winter sun exposure, a central layered roof truss spans the entire length of the house, allowing the placement of multi-layered sloping roof plates.
Second
Visbeen Associates
Vacation Homes (Over 3000 sq.ft.)
First
Allegretti Architects - Levels and wings built on a central gathering place have panoramic views that are enhanced by the home’s diagonal orientation. Materials include Douglas-fir beams and bamboo and limestone flooring.

Vacation Home Outside of Michigan
First
DesRosiers Architects - This Aspen residence exemplifies contemporary Rocky Mountain comfort and avoids the usual Swiss-chalet and Old West clichés. It has an updated peaked roof of maintenance-free metal.

New Model Home in a New-Home Development
First
Jones-Keena & Co. / Guidobono Building - The goal was to make this French-style home look old, but with an updated modern, edited feel. Furnishings have clean lines, but lean toward the traditional feel of the home. Turquoise, aqua, and chartreuse provide drama in an otherwise serene color palette.

Best Contemporary Residential Architecture (Under 4000 sq.ft.)
First
first / McIntosh Poris Associates / MDG Design-Janice Steinhardt - This two-story home sits above grade with a subterranean garage. A strong, angular roofline and aluminum-framed windows offer visual interest. The front porch with a black metal railing acts as a bridge.
Second
Mark Johnson & Associates
Third
Architectural Resource / Meadowlark Builders
Best Traditional Residential Architecture (Under 4000 sq.ft.)
First (tie)
Krieger Associates / Brandywine Construction - This new home had to fit a small site while providing five bedrooms, four and a half baths, and an au-pair suite. Three stories, a finished lower level, and a small apartment above the garage met those requests.
First (tie)
GETA Design / Ryan Construction - An exterior remodel with an updated garage and a new bird’s-nest addition for office space was accomplished within rather strict confines.
Second
Visbeen Associates
Third
Kevin Hart Associates / Victor Talia Construction
Best Contemporary Residential Architecture (Over 4000 sq.ft.)
First
Visbeen Associates - The design of this three-level home maximizes views. The floor plan centers on a core living room. Anchoring the second level is a central loft-living area that’s flanked by a master bedroom.
Second
AZD Associates-Architects
Third
Dominick Tringali Architects
Best Traditional Residential Architecture (Over 4000 sq.ft.)
First
Visbeen Associates - An unusual third-floor cupola offers bird’s-eye views of the surrounding countryside. Other features include cameo windows near the entry, a curving hipped roof, and three-car garage.
