Carefully designed custom millwork punctuates the French theme of this estate home. Oversize crowns, friezes, cartouches, and beams tame and make more intimate the soaring spaces. Each of the home’s spaces has its own particular carved motif set into custom door casings.

This three-story staircase is reminiscent of a medieval castle — but with a contemporary twist. Each individual stair tread is cantilevered from thick Ohio bluestone masonry, and the curved-glass railing system with the stainless steel cap is secured in a continuous groove. “Nicely done,” said judge Jeff Jordan. Added judge Arden Stephenson: “I love the natural light streaming in and highlighting the stone wall.”

This unique pattern fulfilled the client’s wishes for a European-style design. The pattern was cut from French white oak found in Germany. The design and hand-scraping of the wood give the feel of a centuries-old European castle floor. Said judge Arden Stephenson: “It’s absolutely stunning. I would love to see the room completed and furnished.”

DETAILS | Interior Use of Stone

1st - CADEN DESIGN GROUP

This gender-neutral bathroom features architectural interest, a neutral color palette, and a simple, timeless appeal. Off the sink counter, a barrier-free seamless shower with a tile rug that consists of diamond shapes incorporates all the shades of the surrounding stone. Thoughtful details give this master bathroom added interest and movement in an otherwise rigid space.

Floor-to-ceiling mitered marble tile (grouted with epoxy) brings a wholeness not achieved through typical spacing and grout joints. “This is a beautiful, clean modern bathroom,” said judge Arden Stephenson. “I love everything about it.”

This dramatic and delicate light fixture had to be customized for the height restriction. Paired with the glass countertop, it ended up being the perfect fit. In the evening, it emits a beautiful illumination across the entire space. “It has the feeling of a high-end restaurant bar,” judge Stephen Chung said.

This sleek fireplace incorporates a floor-to-ceiling surround in a thin veneer ledge stone in Arctic White, with a contrasting fireplace box painted in black. A free-floating gray limestone hearth and mantel in ruff-sawn oak enhance the look. Said judge Jeff Jordan: “The stone adds scale and texture.” Added judge Arden Stephenson: “I love this sleek, contemporary look.”

DETAILS | Custom Cabinet Installation

1st - CADEN DESIGN GROUP

One of the many appointments in this master bathroom is its excellent cabinetry, storage, and display system. Architectural interest abounds in many areas. A centrally located cabinet that boasts a beveled mirror for storage and a hamper pull-out below (not shown) create convenience. Contrasting with the white cabinetry is polished stone tile and an inviting bath tub.

Inspired by kinetic artist Reuben Margolin, this piece’s lighting fixture is made of steel, while the pulleys are cast in bronze and the diffuser arms are bent birch. Using a remote control, the user can open and close the arms of the light from anywhere in the room, changing the shape and varying the mood while controlling the light aperture.
