Head west on Michigan Avenue until you reach Saline and you’ll be greeted by the key-lime colored clapboard of the Davenport House, otherwise known as Curtiss Mansion. Built in 1875 for $8,500, the home belonged to William H. Davenport — one of the city’s leading merchants during the days when Saline’s location on the road to Chicago made it an important stop for agricultural freight headed west. Now the home — listed on the National Register in 1975 — offers a stately welcome to passers-by and a reminder of the salty city’s history.
