Books: 'American Fashion Designers at Home'

Published:

Fashion design and home décor have much in common — visual appeal, for one thing, although one tends to be more trend-focused than the other.

Combine the two on the pages of a book, and the natural result is total eye candy. American Fashion Designers at Home, by Rima Suqi (Assouline, $65), shows what the people who make a living dressing us do when they focus their creativity on dressing their own homes.
In the book’s foreword, Margaret Russell, Elle Décor editor in chief, writes that fashion designers’ homes “offer unique insight into their points of view.” Featured digs include those of Oscar De La Renta, Carolina Herrera, Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, Derek Lam, Ralph Lauren, Bob Mackie, Mark Badgley and James Mischka, Tracy Reese, and Kate Spade.

Reem Acra’s 3,200-square-foot New York City apartment is as luxe as the wedding gowns she designs. Tory Burch’s Pierre Hotel residence is rich with Chinese porcelain and Central Park views. It was furnished with interior designer Daniel Romualdez, who designed her stores.

All of the pictured interiors need only one accessory, which the owners are happy to supply: a well-dressed occupant who blends with the stylish décor.
